New York to Michigan

Opening of the Erie Canal

Note the serendipitious situation of New York's access to the Midwest via Hudson/Mohawk river route. The steady gaze westward of the dignitaries in this rendering reflect a determination to expand the frontier into untamed lands. The canal provided convenient access for New England migrants who eventually settled in Michigan.

Our ancestors in New York State and other eastern states felt the time was right to seek land in Michigan, and the years 1835-1850 brought almost a flood of new settlers into the southern portions of Michigan.
Census of Michigan est;
1836 population 35,000
1837 population 175,000

Edward Lewis Way was one such who removed from Genesee, NY to Genesee, MI.
