Parking for Hillsdale's 'most popular fair in the world'
In 1836, Hiram was a baby when his parents emigrated from New York. In 1863, he was taxed $10 for a license as a stallion owner. In 1870, he resided at Jefferson, Hillsdale County, with his wife Mariah and children. In 1874, Hiram L. Way was employed as bar tender at Smith's Hotel and living in Coldwater. (Located on the Michigan Southern RR line; it was the largest city in South Michigan). In 1880, Hiram Way is listed at Jefferson, Hillsdale County, and his occupation is listed as 'raising horses'. In 1898, his occupation listed on his death record is 'veterinary surgeon'.

Hiram Lewis Way was born 11 May 1832 at Pembroke, Genesee County, New York, son of Edward Lewis Way and Polly Sawtell. He died 11 Jan 1898. He is buried in Lakeview cemetery, Hillsdale, Branch County, Michigan. He married on 4 Jan 1860 to Mariah Tripp. She was born November 1842 in New York, daughter of Isaiah M. Tripp and Polly Ann Jenkins. They had 7 children.

Hiram Way, a veterinary surgeon of Hillsdale, was found dead in his barn Tuesday morning January 11. Mr. Way left home early in the evening as usual to do his evening work and his whereabouts were not known until his body was found in the barn, about four o’clock in the morning by night watch Osborn. The decision of the coroner’s inquest was that death resulted from heart failure. Mr. Way was 63 years of age and had been a resident of Hillsdale county all his life. He leaves a wife and five sons, all of whom were present at the funeral, which was held at his late residence, 21 Campaign St. Thursday morning at 10 o’clock, Rev. Swan officiating.
